An In-Home Newborn Session in Sarasota is always an opportunity to create something unique, and sweet Eleanor’s session gave me the perfect chance to add a fresh look to my newborn portfolio.
While soft pinks and classic neutrals will always have a place in newborn photography, I had been looking forward to using two beautiful floral fabrics in shades of blue and purple for a baby girl. When Eleanor’s mom, Izzy, mentioned that she loved blue for a girl, I knew Eleanor would be the perfect little one to bring that vision to life. The result was a collection of timeless portraits that feel soft, elegant, and just a little different from my traditional baby girl styling.
A Fresh Take on Baby Girl Newborn Styling
Every newborn session is designed a little differently, and one of my favorite parts of the process is selecting colors and textures that feel timeless while still reflecting each family’s style.
For Eleanor’s session, I was excited to move beyond the traditional pink palette. Soft shades of blue and lavender paired beautifully with delicate floral textures, creating a look that feels classic, feminine, and a little unexpected. After I showed Eleanor’s mom several styling options, she told me to choose my favorite – and when she mentioned she wasn’t really drawn to pink for a baby girl, I knew these floral setups would be perfect. These colors photographed beautifully against Eleanor’s soft features and created a gallery that feels fresh while remaining timeless.
Baby-Led Newborn Sessions
At 17 days old, Eleanor came to her session with a big appetite and her own ideas about how the day would unfold. Like many babies photographed a little later in the newborn stage, she needed plenty of feeding breaks before settling into those peaceful sleepy poses.
Every newborn session is led by the baby, never by the clock. I build plenty of extra time into each session so we can pause whenever a baby needs to eat, be changed, or simply spend a few extra minutes in mom or dad’s arms. Those breaks are all part of creating a relaxed experience and beautiful portraits.
One of those breaks even worked out in our favor. Eleanor had a surprise wardrobe change after a blowout, and her mom dressed her in a sweet blue outfit that happened to coordinate perfectly with the floral styling we’d planned. Sometimes the little unexpected moments end up feeling like they were always meant to be.
Bringing the Studio to Your Home
For every in-home newborn session, I arrive with everything needed to create a complete portrait experience. From wraps, headbands, and carefully selected props to professional lighting and studio backdrops, every detail is packed and planned before I arrive.
For Eleanor’s session, that preparation allowed us to move seamlessly between different setups while keeping the soft blue and lavender color palette consistent throughout her gallery. It also gave us the flexibility to adapt when the day didn’t unfold exactly as planned. Even though everything was created inside her family’s home, the finished portraits have the timeless, polished look of a studio session.
The Best Plans Leave Room for the Unexpected
Although Eleanor’s session was planned as a baby-only portrait session, I packed one of the dresses from my client closet that coordinated perfectly with the soft blues I’d be using with Eleanor, just in case the opportunity arose for a few family portraits.
As it sometimes happens during baby-led newborn sessions, Eleanor was happiest being held while she finished a few extra feedings. I asked her mom if she’d like to try a few parent portraits while we waited for Eleanor to settle, and her first response was that she hadn’t planned on it and had nothing to wear. That’s when I pulled out the dress and invited her to borrow it.
Those portraits quickly became some of my favorites from the entire session. They weren’t part of the original plan, but having that dress ready allowed us to capture the family’s very first professional portraits together. Sometimes a little preparation makes it possible to create something even more meaningful than you expected.
Preserving These First Days With An In-Home Newborn Session in Sarasota
The newborn stage passes more quickly than most parents expect. Tiny features change, sleepy stretches become shorter, and before long those first weeks become a blur of feedings, diaper changes, and late-night snuggles.
I’m so grateful to Eleanor’s family for allowing me to document this special season and for trusting me to create something a little different.
