Top Breastfeeding Essentials for Expectant Moms + Sarasota Lactation Consultants

When I was preparing for motherhood, I remember being overwhelmed by all the things people said I needed. But after nursing my daughter until she was almost 3, I can tell you there are a few true breastfeeding essentials for expectant moms that make all the difference. These were my personal lifesavers, and they’re the same items Sarasota moms recommend again and again—along with the support of amazing local lactation consultants.

My Go-To Breastfeeding Essentials

Here are some of the items I couldn’t live without and just know expectant moms will find these especially helpful to have ready before baby arrives:

1. Nursing Bras and Tanks
Comfortable nursing bras and tanks were a daily must for me. I basically lived in them for months—they made feedings easier, especially in the middle of the night, and offered enough support to feel put-together without sacrificing comfort. My favorite bras are from Kindred Bravely and Mom Cozy.

2. A Quality Breast Pump
Having reliable breast pumps gave me freedom and peace of mind. They allowed me to take breaks, build a freezer stash, and even enjoy a few hours out while knowing my baby was cared for. I liked the Elvie Stride for my wearable pump, and the Spectra S1 for my main pump. I also liked using my Hakka to collect let-down from the non-nursing side, which helped me get every drop of milk saved.

3. Nipple Cream
I didn’t think I’d need nipple cream… until I did. The first weeks can be tough, and having this on hand made things so much more manageable. Trust me, it’s one of those “better safe than sorry” items you’ll be glad to own.

4. Nursing Pillow
A good nursing pillow saved my back and arms during those endless feeding sessions. It made positioning easier and more comfortable—something I recommend to every new mom. I personally used My Brest Friend, and loved having a free hand so I could multitask while walking around (in circles sometimes), feeding my baby girl.

5. Water Bottle and Snacks
Breastfeeding made me so thirsty and hungry! Keeping a large water bottle and some healthy snacks nearby kept my energy up and my milk supply steady. I love hydra flask water bottles – not only do they keep my water cold for the entire day, but I love knowing I am using a bottle that does not have lead in it’s core. My favorite ultra-clean snack is Bobo’s peanut butter lactation bars.

Final Thoughts

Welcoming a new baby is full of changes, and while every breastfeeding journey is unique, the right tools and support make all the difference. Having practiced extended nursing with my own daughter, I know firsthand how important it is to feel encouraged and equipped during those early months. As a Sarasota portrait photographer, I love helping new moms not only capture those fleeting newborn moments but also feel cared for as they settle into life with their little one. If you’re ready to plan a session that celebrates your baby’s first days and creates heirlooms your family will treasure, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
